McWay Falls Beach, A Big Sur Landmark That Belongs On Your Bucket List

This Victorian-style Point San Luis Lighthouse is near the town of San Luis Obispo located on property owned by PG&E, but public tours are given with a guide. Its unique architecture is known as "Prairie Victorian" because it blends the lavishness of Victorian buildings with the practicalities of living on the prairie. It's one of only three lighthouses ever built in this style and the only one that's still standing. The Point Bonita Lighthouse is one of the most photogenic, since it sits on a lonely piece of land that's only reachable by a man-made bridge.

California Lighthouses to Visit on Your Road Trip

The lighthouse itself has been closed to tours since 2001 due to structural issues, but the old employees' bunkers have been turned into a popular youth hostel. Located in Pigeon Point State Park, there are plenty of hiking trails and unbeatable views of the Pacific to keep travelers entertained. This historic lighthouse has marked the entrance to the port since 1913. The breakwater is 9,250 feet long and contains nearly three million tons of rock, brought over from Santa Catalina Island.

After hunting around, Conklin discovered a half dozen women talking and joking around the base of the tower. Turns out they were sailors’ sweethearts who had come out to watch the fleet steam into port at daybreak. An oil house, built of reinforced concrete and anchored to the breakwater, was completed on December 26, 1913, and just a few days later it received an awful pounding. Keeper George D. Jeffrey provided the following account on Monday, January 19, 1914 of a storm that struck the station.

The Pigeon Point Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the west coast, reaching up to 115 feet, and is absolutely breathtaking. Many of these lighthouses have grand visitor centers and some even have museums in them like the Surfing Museum at the Mark Abbott Memorial Lighthouse. Each lighthouse has a different appearance and a unique story to tell. Almost any California road trip can include a stop at one of these historic spots. Most people who are stopping at Piedras Blancas on the Central Coast come to see the hoard of resident elephant seals who occupy the beach, but completely miss out on the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse.

The first two keepers at the Point Fermin Light were sisters Mary and Ella Smith. They were joint lightkeepers for the first eight years of the lighthouse’s service, and not the last sisters to take care of this place. In 1925, sisters Thelma and Juanita Austin took over care of the lighthouse after their father (the lighthouse keeper at that time) and mother both passed away. Interested entities were given sixty days to submit a letter of interest expressing their desire to submit an application for ownership. Included with the lighthouse were an adjacent guest quarters and a coastal lookout, but the Coast Guard would retain ownership of the lens.

Santa Cruz Surfing Museum Lighthouse

This California lighthouse has now been turned into a tourist attraction, serving as a museum and as a living memory of the past. The lighthouse features many historical documents, photos, and maritime artifacts as a way for visitors to educate themselves about the history of the structure. On October 27, 2013 the lighthouse celebrated its 100th birthday after an extensive renovation. The lighthouse is not open for walk through tours however harbor tour boats are your best opportunity to get a close-up view. From land, walk to the end of the fishing pier at Cabrillo Beach for a view.

The act occurred in Collect Pond Park, a designated protest area across the street from the courthouse, which was open to the public, according to Police Chief Jeffrey B. Maddrey. Police said they hadn’t received reports that Azzarello made any statements prior to setting himself alight. In preparation for the lighthouse’s centennial celebration, Olesen and Olguin attempted to locate the Fresnel lens removed from Point Fermin Lighthouse just before World War II. While in a restaurant one day talking about the lens, the pair reportedly met someone who knew the lens’ whereabouts.

Not wanting everyone aboard the cruise ships and other vessels that sail into the harbor to be welcomed by a “rust bucket of a lighthouse,” the Cabrillo Beach Booster Club launched a project to restore the tower. The group applied for and received funding from the Port of Los Angeles, thanks to a large settlement with a Chinese shipping company. Under a $1.8 million renovation that started in October 2011, the tower was encapsulated and sandblasted, and a zinc coating was added to reinforce the tower's steel base. The stucco that covers the upper two-thirds of the lighthouse was also repaired and painted. This work wrapped up just in time to celebrate the lighthouse’s centennial in 2013. A centennial celebration was held on October 27, 2013, during which 242 guests were taken out for a close-up view of the restored lighthouse.

Two-hour tours are offered on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings year-round from the Piedras Blancas Motel. From July 15 – August 15, there are also tours on Monday and Friday mornings. A visit to this lighthouse near Monterey means seeing a Cape Cod-style lighthouse on the West Coast, along with visiting a National Historic Landmark. This lighthouse has continuously been in operation since 1855, which makes it the West Coast’s oldest active lighthouse. Halfway between San Francisco and Santa Cruz through Big Sur, travelers will pass the West Coast’s tallest lighthouse.
